What is limescale?
Limescale forms when water dries and the minerals in it are left behind on surfaces. These are mainly magnesium and calcium. The harder the water in your area, the more minerals it contains and the faster limescale stains appear. The bathroom is a real hotspot for limescale. Because of the combination of heat, moisture and regular running water, limescale has plenty of chance to build up. It sticks to anything that stays wet. Think of tiles, taps, glass and grout. And the longer you wait to clean it, the more stubborn it becomes.
How do you remove limescale effectively?
Luckily, limescale can be removed well, as long as you know what works. A classic product that almost everyone has at home is cleaning vinegar. Simply put a little on a cloth or sponge, let it work for a while and then rinse well. For taps or shower heads, you can also fill a plastic bag with vinegar, tie it around them and let it soak for a few hours. Not a fan of vinegar because of the smell? Lemon juice works in the same way and smells a little fresher. If the limescale is stuck firmly, you can carefully make a paste from baking soda and water. Let it work for a short time and then rinse it away.
Be careful with natural stone, matt taps or other sensitive surfaces. Acidic products can damage them. In that case, it is better to use a special cleaning product that is suitable for your material.
How do you prevent limescale?
Prevention is better than cure. The less chance limescale has to build up, the easier it is to keep your bathroom clean and shiny. That is why you should dry wet surfaces after use with a squeegee or cloth. Glass and taps especially benefit from this. Ventilation also plays a role. The faster your bathroom dries, the less chance limescale has to stick. So open a window after showering or use good extraction. Want to take a more thorough approach? Then a water softener is worth considering. It removes limescale from your tap water and is not only good for your bathroom, but also for your appliances.
